Art Jams & Studio Services

Inclusive installations and participatory workshops built on the A/I/R (Access, Inclusion, Resilience) framework.

๐ŸŽจ Workshop Philosophy: Beyond the Glue

Traditional lantern workshops rely on white PVC glueโ€”a method that is pragmatically impossible for "make-and-take" community sessions and definitively fails during the rainy autumn festival season.

  • Pragmatic Immediacy: Mechanical fastening (stapling and wire-tension) allows participants to take their work home immediately without waiting for glue to dry.
  • Adaptive Access: Heavy-duty staplers are provided for participants who may not have the fine motor skills required for hand-sewing.
  • Weather Resilience: Mechanical joins ensure the lanterns are durable enough to survive the West Coast rain season.

โœจ Next Coming Workshop: The "Sandwich" Lantern

Technique: Organic vs. Synthetic Balance

Directly applying the method from the Rabbit Children series, participants learn to protect delicate Mulberry paper between layers of translucent silk-like fabric.

We use heavy-duty staplers for rapid, mechanical constructionโ€”ensuring the lantern is ready for immediate transport and West Coast rain resilience.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Access Commitment

Annreflection Studio is committed to creating workshops that are accessible, welcoming, and flexible. We prioritize sensory-friendly environments and tactile materials.

As a d/Deaf artist, I provide venue assessments for technology support.

Technical Foundations

I. Structural Engineering

The 5 Essential Joints: Mastery of bamboo and branch joinery (Flat, Cross, Hook, T, and Corner).

Focuses on tension, structural integrity, and the physics of bamboo slats and upcycled organic materials to achieve shape without breaking

II. Material Science

3-Level Ink Loading: Traditional Sumi-e technique using controlled dilution levels (Light, Medium, Dark).

Utilizes capillary action and brush pressure to create botanical textures and tonal depth in a single stroke.

III. Optical Physics

Kinetic Shadow Animation: Manipulating the focal point and distance of the light source rather than the puppet.

By changing the light's angle and proximity, the shadow undergoes optical transformation, creating a cinematic sense of movement.

IV. Form-Based Shell Casting as whole lantern shaping

Complex Volume Construction: A precise casting method using real-life objects as a master mold (if not available, form mold with newpaper and bundle inti desired shape).

Uses a protective interface (plastic wrap) and surgical mending to create rigid, lightweight paper shells.

๐Ÿ’ก Collaborator & Funder Insights

Venue Sustainability: Securing free venues reduces financial burdens when material costs are involved. NeighbourSpace serves as a vital hub.
Access Design: As a hard-of-hearing artist, I provide venue assessments for deaf/HoH technology support.

Studio Services & Commissions

Hand-Painted Textile Banners

Vivid, large-scale banners painted with acrylic-based fabric paints to celebrate culture and community identity. These custom works are also available for interior decoration, functional curtains, or room partitions.

Installations (Big & Small)

Custom lanterns designed for storefront windows or large-scale outdoor festivals. Each piece integrates authentic Chinese techniques with a sustainable eco-art approach using upcycled and salvaged materials.

Puppetry: Beyond Binary

Exploring the "inner child" or "super-power self" through identity play.

Asian Heritage: Meditative Ink

A 3-hour immersive workshop in Chinese brush painting, designed for portability and community engagement.

Participants explore foundational strokes using bamboo brushes, focusing on 3-level ink dilution and "dry brush" techniques for botanical textures. To ensure a successful experience for all skill levels, I utilize under-paper templates that guide participants in creating presentable final pieces while focusing on the meditative flow of the ink.

Presented in partnership with Alter Arts Society and the Support Network for Indigenous Women & Women of Colour (SNIWWOC).

Multi-sensory Shoebox Stages

Inclusive, non-verbal storytelling kits for personal narrative play.

Participants create modular, changeable scenes using a "material mart" of transparent colors, natural objects, and varied textures. Designed to be portable, these stages allow creators to carry their personal stories with them.

Developed for the BC Culture Days A/I/R series, specifically tailored for disability arts and accessibility.

Grade School Upcycling: Lantern Making

A condensed 1-hour workshop designed for young learners. Students explore sustainable art through a "dry technique" construction using upcycled vegetable mesh.

  • Duration: 1 Hour
  • Focus: Single-structure construction
  • Medium: Reclaimed mesh & dry assembly

Lantern Making Art Jam: Let Your Inner Shine

Participants explore personal storytelling through the "Let Your Inner Light Shine" prompt. The session begins with technical training in the 5-joint structural technique, allowing makers to build a form of their choice.

We utilize a "Material Mart" featuring donated fabrics, rice paper, grapevines, and bamboo. A meditative ink station is provided to guide the creative process, fostering a sensory environment that encourages resilience and focus.

Developed for the BC Culture Days A/I/R series, specifically tailored for disability arts and multisensory accessibility.

Winter Arts Festival: Community Art Jam

A specialized drop-in lantern making workshop hosted at NeighbourSpace as an affiliated event of the Winter Arts Festival.

These sessions foster neighborhood ties through spontaneous creative play and meaningful conversations. Participants enjoyed chatting, socializing, and collective troubleshooting.
